The Conservative government in power has made the student visa rules a lot stricter than what was previously expected. The government announced that they want to reduce overall levels of non-European Union immigration into Britain from the 2009 level of 184,000 to the ‘tens of thousands’.
The reasons provided for this is the fact that a high number of students use the lax visa rules to enter UK for employment opportunities and immigration purposes. This was conveyed by the Immigration Minister Damian Green who stated that the primary objective of studying in the UK must be to study, not to work or acquire long term residency status.
Some have raised concerns over this measure stating that it would affect the thriving education sector of the country. The measures taken by the government could negatively affect the education institute and take away a very high number of international students to other destinations like US, Australia and New Zealand.
The continued restrictions being imposed are expected to make the education sector experience a sudden increase in the amount of student application before the strict laws come into place in a years time.
Results recently published in The Times Higher Education Magazine show that, according to 13,388 academics spread across 131 countries, UK unis come second only to ones in the US in terms of ‘reputation’, with 12 institutions appearing in the top 100 list.
So why are there more British students than ever before heading to universities outside of the UK instead? The Guardian recently reported that the number of students taking British degrees overseas has overtaken the number of foreign students at UK universities, growing at least 70% within the last 10 years and last year a record number, 22,000, were studying for degrees abroad.

There are many reasons for students to wish to continue their studies abroad – one of the main being the wealth of experience that would come from being educated outside of the UK. Aside from the opportunity to get involved in different programmes, there are, of course, the more lifestyle-orientated benefits.
Making the decision to study abroad is not nearly as difficult as coming to terms with what, exactly, studying abroad entails in terms of your personal life and finances.
The decision to study abroad is one that changes lives, and as such, is not an easy decision to make. Although it sounds as simple as checking the box that says, “Yes, I want to go,” sooner or later you’ll probably have to consider what, exactly, that means.
